- Usage
- ¨¨¨¨¨
- Notepad is a simple desktop program which allows 99 pages of Notes
- to be stored easily.
-
- Loading Notepad is identical to loading any other Risc OS
- application, simply double-click it's icon.
-
- Once loaded, the Notepad icon will appear on the left hand side of
- the icon bar. Clicking <menu> on this icon shows two menu options.
- The first to quit the application, the second showing details about
- it.
-
- Clicking <select> over the Notepad icon brings up the main window.
- This window is where you type your notes in. There are 9 lines (per
- page) available to type in such notes, next to each line is an icon
- labelled "abc...". Clicking on this icon with the <select> button
- will cause the contents of the corresponding icon to be typed
- wherever the caret is located. Clicking <adjust> will do the same,
- except a return character (13) will be entered after the text. This
- really, is the main purpose of Notepad. Notes can be stored, and
- passed to other applications quickly and easily using this method.
-
- A title icon is displayed at the bottom of each page. Here you can
- input whatever you like as the title of each page. Next to this is
- the Page icon. Typing in a page number (between 1 and 99) followed
- by pressing the RETURN key will take you directly to this page.
-
- Finally, at the bottom right of the window are six different forward
- and backward icons. These can be used to quickly navigate through
- the Notepad. Clicking the leftmost icon always takes you directly to
- page 1, whereas the rightmost icon always takes you directly to page
- 99. The next icons in on each side respectively move forwards /
- backwards 10 pages at a time. The inner most icons move forwards /
- backwards 1 page at a time.
-
- Clicking <menu> whilst inside the main window brings up a menu
- containing 6 choices as follows :-
-
- -------------
- : Insert >
- : Save >
- : Search F4 >
- : Delete >
- -------------
- :Setup... >
- :Help... >
- -------------
-
- The first menu 'Insert' has 13 different choices. The first nine
- perform exactly the same nine functions as the 'abc...' icons on the
- main window. These menu options also show the associated hotkey keys
- to perform the functions. For example, pressing CTRL SHIFT F2 will
- enter the text currently stored in the first line of the current
- page. This is extremely useful for fussy applications which keep
- closing their windows whenever you move the mouse. It is also often
- quicker to use this method rather than use the icons.
-
- Towards the bottom of this menu are four further options, these add
- specific text, again at the present caret position. Again, hotkey
- combinations can be used to select these options.
-
- The next menu option relates to saving your notepad. The first
- option in this menu tree is 'Save Default'. Selecting this option
- saves your current notepad file as a file called 'Default' which is
- stored within the !Notepad application. This has the advantage that
- whenever Notepad is loaded, this file will automatically be loaded
- immediately. The second save option brings up the standard Risc OS
- save box, dragging the icon to a directory viewer allows you to save
- your Notepad file wherever you like.
-
- The final save option allows you to save the currently displayed
- page as a standard text file. This may be useful if, for example, you
- wish to load the page into another program (for example) Impression -
- which would then allow you to print your page.
-
- The third option on the menu tree is the 'Search' option. Following
- the arrow for this option brings up a simple Search window. Entering
- some text into the Find icon will cause Notepad to search through
- each of the 99 pages looking for a match. If a match is found,
- Notepad will then display that particular page, and flash the
- relevent icon (incase the text you searched for isn't visible) so you
- can find it. If this isn't the match you were after (for example if
- you were searching for someone's name and you just entered their
- first name in the find icon, then you can click the 'Go' icon to
- resume the search. Also on the 'Search' window is an option to
- ignore or match the case. This be toggled by either clicking the icon
- or by pressing CTRL + C.
-
- The fourth option on the menu tree allows you to either delete the
- current page, or the entire Notepad. This should be straight forward
- enough to use.
-
- Selecting the fifth option 'Setup...' brings up another window.
- This window is where the way in which Notepad functions can be
- somewhat customised.
-
- On the Configuration window there are two sets of options. The
- first six options are global. This means that they are stored within
- Notepad itself and take effect on any Notepad file you might load.
- The final two options are individual to each Notepad you save.
-
- The global options perform functions as follows :-
-
- 'Load Default File' : If this option is selected then
- whenever Notepad is loaded it will
- attempt to load the Default file stored
- within it.
-
- 'Save Default on Quit' : If this option is selected then
- Notepad will save the Default file
- whenever it is closed down.
-
- 'Justify Caret to Right' : If this option is selected then the
- caret will always be positioned to the
- right of any text in the current icon.
- This can be extremely useful if the
- text stored exceeds the displayable
- limit as whenever the caret moves to
- this icon, the text displayed is the
- text justified from the right hand side.
-
- 'Unsaved File Warning' : If this option is enabled then Notepad
- will warn you of any unsaved data if
- you exit, or if you try and load another
- file.
-
- 'Open Main Window' : If this option is selected then Notepad
- will always open its main window after it
- has been loaded. Note, this option
- overrides the option (below) relating to
- individual Notepad files.
-
- 'Enable Smart Dragging' : If this option is enabled then Notepad
- allows you to drag a standard ASCII text
- file to any icon on its main window.
- Notepad will then attempt to extract the
- first line of text from the file and
- enter it into the relevent icon.
-
- The Notepad options perform functions as follows :-
-
- 'Open Window After Load' If this option is selected, then whenever
- the notepad file is loaded, the main window
- will open (if it is not already).
-
- 'Enable Write to Caret' This option allows you to disable the
- text typing functions of Notepad. This
- might be necessary if an application you
- are using uses the same hotkey combinations
- as Notepad.
-
- Also on the Configuration window are three options. 'Save' saves the
- current (Global) configuration options. 'Cancel' aborts any changes you
- might have made to (any of) the configuration. Finally 'Ok' accepts the
- current configuration, but does not save it. This can be mainly used
- whenever you change the Notepad choices.
-
- Finally, the last option on the menu tree is 'Help...', this brings up
- this file!
-
- That's about it! I hope this application proves useful. If you wish to
- send any comments, criticisms, donations you are more than welcome. :-)
-
- One other thing, I'm currently working on a number of filters which will
- allow various other file formats to be imported by Notepad. The first of
- these (which are present within THIS version) are support for ANT
- Internet Suite's Hotlist files. These should be stored within
-
- !InetSuite.Internet.Files.Hotlist
-
- Dragging one to Notepad should allow you to quickly import WWW addresses
- into Notepad.
-
- Finally, I would like to give my sincere thanks to Martin Tillman, who
- not only encouraged this project from the start, but who contributed
- ideas as well as designing most of the superb templates and graphics
- which Notepad uses. Thank you.
-
- Please note, this application supports Acorn's !Help application.
-
- Thanks
